Hmm, thought i'd post a comment rather than fill in a little box.
Basically, we're in a department where 'Coverage' is important. And because several people within my team don't book that particular holiday, I don't have a problem. About October time (although this year, it's already sorted, because we had a new holiday booking system, so I figured I'd enter the whole lot)
Elsewhere in the department, there's fierce competition for 'christmas' holiday, and so it's pretty much 'all booked' by the end of January the previous year.
coverage is the most important bit for us, too, so it's basically a race on who claims the period first - and whoever is last, has to stick around at work because we can't all disappear. we usually start discussing late october/early november and all try to juggle our plans so we can all go away at some point.
