Back in Time.

On Sunday, I went to see [livejournal.com profile] velveteencat's show at IOWest in Hollywood. It was fun, but the tiny, tiny black-box stage had me flashing back to my theatre days in college. Of course, the stages back then were bigger too, because we weren't renting floorspace on Hollywood Boulevard.

After slightly muffed introduction to [livejournal.com profile] velveteencat (I confused her with another Heather I know on the LA sketch-comedy scene), I went in to take in the two shows before hers. Watching those shows, I wondered if the introduction might turn out to be a mistake. "If The Jim and Heather Show is anything like these guys," I thought, "I'll wish I'd been able to escape without being spotted."

Luckily, Jim and Heather were not only better than their predecessors (easy), they were also very funny (not so easy, since, as my girlfriend has pointed out, I'm a bit of a theatre and comedy snob). And after the show, I had drinks with Heather and her friend in the bar conveniently located outside the theatre. (Probably moreso for the audience than the performers, since it's just another thing stealing stage floor.)

I'm always a little worried about going to small theatre; I'm always a bit worried that things will regress into the strained politicking that accompanied college productions (and my ultimately disastrous stint with the Ronin Ensemble). Instead, the atmosphere was very comfortable, and I felt more like an adult having a good time at a bar, than a teen being all theatery. I had a great time, and I was definitely glad I made myself get up to get out to get in to the show.

Unfortunately, my sleep schedule was upset enough that I didn't have time to clean this weekend. Yeah, that'll be my excuse.
