Patch Adams, Dead Again, What Dreams May Come . . .

Man, it's been a busy week. A busy, busy, busy week. I'm very behind on sleep, and yet, very relaxed. How did that happen?

In preparing for Saturday's Los Angeles [livejournal.com profile] npl meet-up, I've been working on the game I'm going to be presenting. It's based on the IMDB Game invented by T McAy. I enjoyed it so much during NPL Chat that I thought I'd adapt it for non-net play.

The game is simple. The Internet Movie Database has, as one of its miscellaneous features, a listing of keywords associated with each film. They're user-submitted and range between the extremely broad (tearjerker) to the insanely specific (needlepoint). Six of these keywords are selected and presented in an order that makes it progressively more likely that someone will guess the correct answer. Scores are assigned for how quickly a person can guess the movie: 10 points for getting it right on the first keyword, 8 points on the second, then 6, 4, 2 and 1. To level the playing field a bit, each person may only make one guess per keyword.

Last week I worked out about forty movie/keyword sets. To see how I was doing, I tested them out on the folks over at [livejournal.com profile] ifmud. I learned a lot that morning. One was that people remember movies better than I thought. The other was that people really like the game. This morning I had another thirty-five prepared and ran another testing game. Much fun was again had by all. So much fun, in fact, that when I returned to the Mud from work, I discovered a new game already in progress. I grabbed a few more movies from other people's offerings (carefully recording who originated them, of course).

Later, I asked what would be a good name for the game. IMDB Keyword Movie Guessing Game just lacks that special something. There were some good suggestions, like Film Flam, Hollywords and Camera Obscura, but the title that just demanded it be used was Robin-Williams-as-Doctor [link no longer works, 9/28/10], our favorite keyword, used in [livejournal.com profile] nothings' set of clues: "DOG RACING, BRAWL, CONSTRUCTION WORKER, THERAPY, UNIVERSITY & ROBIN WILLIAMS AS DOCTOR." (Because of the title, this movie is now the Official Example.)

Now armed with over eighty movies, I will be heading to Ventura with a relatively young game with an infant title to entertain the masses. If the response over the internet is any guide, they'll really enjoy it.

Bring it to Con! (Bring yourself to Con! You'll be at Con, yes?)

I'm not sure which scares me more: that "robin-williams-as-doctor" is an IMDb keyword, or that there are six movies that match it.

You think that's scary... just try searching the MTG archives for dan-katz-as-eccentric-comic-relief.

Brilliant! I wanna play!

Ventura is my hometown. This nugget of info has little relevance save the fact that I wanted to share.

Good luck :-)
