tablesaw: Sketch of an antique tablesaw (Antigua)

Most Foul, Strange and Unnatural.

After watching The Simpsons, I think I'm going to start using "murther" instead of "murder" again.

After watching The Incredibles, I think I am going to give a list of movies it rocks the socks off of:
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Finding Nemo
  • Toy Story & Toy Story 2
  • Spiderman 2
  • Superman
  • The Man With the Golden Gun
  • Dr. No
The design and animation were amazing, and the story was much more complex and subtle than Pixar's previous efforts. Rarely do I say this, but I'd really like to go back and see it again.

After pleasantly frittering the day away, I must report that it is a wonderful thing to be easily pleased. However, it is not a good component to getting one's house clean.

Along with the above, my new mindless time killer is Jewel Quest. The basic gameplay is the old standby Bejeweled. But when a match has been made, the squares wear the jewels were removed turn gold, like Alchemy. And like in Alchemy, the goal is to clear the board. It moves pretty quickly, and the most tricky bits are still pretty simple. And the danger of running out of moves is low. It requires very little thought, and is good for when one's mind is occupied elsewhere.

Good stuff.

I've actually seen it twice now, and I do want to see it again (though now I could wait for either the DVD or free tickets). I want to spy out the clever things sneaky animators snuck in.

It's the first Pixar film rated PG.

I also really liked the short before the film. }:-D

Actually, if you get the full version of Jewel Quest, it requires a ton of planning and thought. There are major twists and obstacles and stuff, and my roommate and I are both obsessed with it, and I'm so frustrated with it that I threw a book at the wall and haven't played since.

I hate those black masks and the stupid guys under the holes that you have to uncover twice before they turn gold. Maybe I'm just stupid but I have to focus really hard on that.

no argument here

That was one fantastic movie. I have to go see it a number of times. Even the soundtrack hit the mark for the action sequences. I don't think I've bought a movie soundtrack since South Park and Menken/Ashman Disney flicks came out. It's quite obvious that Pixar does a lot of prep work before they begin animating: the story was very solid without getting maudlin when you thought it might. If you're a quality animation / comic book superheroes freak like me you're gonna go gaga. (I still can't believe how good Brad Bird was as Edna Mode!)

Not only was the movie PG, but it was also almost 2 hours long. Definitely the most "adult" of the CGI movies to date, but still plenty for kids to go gaga over. I saw it with my sister's family and my 8 year old nephew loved it. (We're calling him "Dash" now instead of "Beast Boy.")

And I think DreamWorks is finally finding religion: they showed the trailer for their next movie, Madagascar, and it actually had an actual "style"! This might be the first time I actually like one of their movies.

Even Blue Sky's next flick, Robots (not previewed), looks tons better than their first movie, Ice Age, which was pretty dull. (I assume this is due in part to having William Joyce on board for Robots: he created Rolie Polie Olie.)

Star Wars 3 was previewed (about what you'd expect -- FINALLY James Earl Jones returns), and so was Pixar's next and last pic under the Disney umbrella, Cars. Didn't exactly send me, so we'll see how good it'll be. Incredibles is gonna be awfully tough to top. Heck, given their powers and the fact that they're a family, it may drive more interest in next year's FF movie.

We (Neuromancer and I) saw the preview for Cars & SW3, too, and that was enough for me to be very glad I saw the movie. We also saw another animated preview, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was. Not Madagascar and not Robots. Hmm.

Oh, yeah, that's it -- Chicken Little. (Thank you, Google!)

Funny; Tom (Neuromancer) & I thought it wasn't as good as Nemo. We thought the plot was cute, but nothing more special than, say, Sky Captain, and the message was a little heavy-handed. But I agree the CGI was absolutely gorgeous. Oh, we were also bummed there were no outtakes.

I don't think they will

[identity profile] toonhead-npl.livejournal.com 2004-11-09 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
That whole "outtakes" thing is already old. I doubt Pixar will be revisiting it again. (Wasn't Nemo the first time they didn't do it?) The Incredibles' end credits were beautiful -- that's some great graphic design, type and character art. Plus that great score again: cool, a little retro, and action-packed.. Swoon...

Chicken Little is Disney's way of saying "Hey, we can make as much money as Pixar can with this CGI stuff. Who needs 'em?" I didn't see a preview of it when I saw the Incredibles, so I hope it's good. (Dinosaurs was pretty ho-hum. But I imagine they'd do a better job of something more cartoony.) But since Disney has laid off most of its animation staff (basically, no more cartoons from Disney unless it's direct to DVD) I wonder who's left that knows this stuff?

Oh speaking of Disney, are we gonna have a trip to Anaheim next July, Tablesaw? Arewearewearewe? I'm planning to take advantage of every vaguely-related animation thing I can while I'm there for the wee so I wanna start planning early.

That's a good point! I'll keep an eye out.

I just saw the two trailers. It looks good! And yes it's directed by the fella who did Emperor's New Groove so I feel much better now. :)

Trailers are available here:
