I've been wanting to do a lyrics meme since [livejournal.com profile] sunyata__ got a horribly inaccurate impression of my music from the music that came up on my iPod while we were driving through LA. And I'd thought of this as something I wanted to try. And I was bored today. So voila.

Every lyric listed below occurs immediately before or immediately after the title of the song. This should help eliminate those times when you can think of the song but not the title. This is a random selection of songs in iTunes that I've rated three stars or higher, and obviously I eliminated songs that didn't have the exact title in the lyrics, or that were otherwise annoying to work with. There are thirty, because I didn't realize how many I'd made until I was at 29, at which point I added another for roundness.

And, as always, only correct guess per person.

Update: Things are moving slowly, so I've added ellipses to all of the quotes, and I've expanded guessing to two songs. So if you've guessed once before, you can guess once more. And if you haven't guessed, you can guess twice!

[identity profile] thedan.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of these seem really familiar, but I only recognize one for sure. But I'm going to wait on that one and see if anybody else gets it. :)

Actually, is #15 "Rubber Duckie"? (I think that's 'awfully' though...)

[identity profile] zdamiana.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
#1 Let's Never Stop Falling in Love / Pink Martini

I can't tell you how surprised I was to recognize not just the first song on your list, but also the second. I am one of those people who almost never gets pop culture references, especially pop music references. The surprising trend of my recognizing songs did not end up continuing beyond #2.

[identity profile] fmi-agent.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
#8. that dog., Being With You

[identity profile] lunchboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How long before we're allowed to make a second guess? I also know #16...

Ooh! Goody, time for a second guess

[identity profile] hahathor.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to go for #16, but since LB seems to want that one, I'll ID #3, which is the traditional tune, "Rocky Road to Dublin." Knowing you, I'd venture it's the Dropkick Murphys doing it on your iPod, though it could be the Pogues.

Is 9 "What I like about you" by the Romantics?

[identity profile] hahathor.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't take a third song, but if this is what I think it is, I can't believe you gave it three stars!

[identity profile] thedan.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! Is #22 "Part of the Process"? (by Morcheeba)

[identity profile] slipjig.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
17) "World Before Columbus," Suzanne Vega

I'll blindly guess "Aphrodite" for the title of #28.

Jangler

[identity profile] thedan.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since clearly nobody else is going to get it, I believe #7 is "Anticlimactic" by that wannabe-rock-star Dan Katz.

[identity profile] paulobrian.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, two guesses!

I think #24 is "You're With Stupid Now" by Aimee Mann.

[identity profile] lunchboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
#16 is "Goalhanger" by Billy Bragg.

[identity profile] lunchboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And #14 is driving me crazy! It's right on the tip of my brain. Anybody?

[identity profile] lunchboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I resorted to Google for #14. And it turns out that, yes, I should have known it.
