It's an incentive not to win for some people, but I think a lot of us come up with puzzle ideas during or because of Hunt. Same goes for structural innovations. Once I have an idea, I want to show it off - and my most appreciative audience is other solvers.
Yeah, kind of like at Pennsic, where the kingdom that *loses* the war gets to keep Pittsburgh. :D
But it's true, for some people writing the puzzles is more fun than solving them. I'm not a terribly good solver, but I often have ideas for puzzles that would only work on the scale of the Mystery Hunt. And since I'm on Mayhem, I haven't yet had a chance to make these puzzles.
It is often said than becoming partner in a law firm is like winning a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie. I'll leave as an exercise to the reader whether that has any applicability here (or even makes sense in the first place).
