Falling Down.
Inspired by
shadesong's post, I thought I'd show my tentative "new fall season" schedule.
Sunday:
8:00 p.m.: The Amazing Race
Late Night: Venture Bros., Metalocalypse, assorted Adult Swim.
Not much I'm committed to on Sundays, but I'm giving Amazing Race another shot this year. If it fails to grab me, it may get lost. If I decide to watch/tape something between 9 and 11, it'll probably be the Without a Cold Case combo.
Venture Bros. had a bit of a rough start. They've been trying to really pick up the pacing of the shows, and in some of the early episodes, it has meant that the some of the great character humor was lost. But
jacksonpublick and crew have managed to get things working smoothly again. Metalocalypse has been another high point of the night. Between this and Guitar Hero, I'm starting to understand a little of what this whole "metal" thing is about.
Monday:
8 p.m.:7th Heaven Prison Break
9 p.m.: Heroes
10 p.m.: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Late Night: BBC mysteries.
This is pretty much the block that most of LJ-land will be watching. Prison Break is really an amazing show, and if you missed last season, you should catch the DVD. It's the only show on television right now that really does tension well. It's almost impossible for me to watch this show without feeling adrenaline start to rush. I've been looking forward to Heroes since Henry Jenkins discussed the pilot. And the other one is Sorkin.
The BBC America's Mystery Monday is usually packed with winners, though some dogs get in as well. The recently ended Life on Mars was fantastic, and Wire in the Blood, which is getting a new season soon, is pretty good serial-killer fare. On the other hand, I'll probably skip this week's Secret Smile.
Vanished has already premiered and has already sucked pretty badly. I don't expect it to be around by the end of the year.
Tuesday:
8 p.m.: House + ?
9 p.m.: Veronica Mars
10 p.m.: Smith
House will dominate the first hour as long as it's there, and after that, I don't know what will happen. I don't follow Gilmore Girls regularly, and Standoff hasn't really wowed me, so I'll probably flit between those two and NCIS. I figure I'll give Friday Night Lights a try, but I don't expect it to stick.
I'm in a similar situation at ten. I like heist shows, and I was one of the few who actually watched Heist, so I expect I'll like this. If not, I'll go back to flipping between the other two shows based on the TV Guide synopses.
In the middle, all will give way to the giant face of Mars. If you haven't been watching, now's the time. Join the legions of my friends who finally watched seasons one and two this summer on DVD! Watch as the writers make the arc mysteries easier to get into! Help this show survive its initial 13-episode order! Don't let it die the death of Arrested Development! House will survive this year if you don't watch it. Veronica Mars likely will not.
Wednesday:
8 p.m.: Jericho
9 p.m.: Criminal Minds / Lost / Justice
10 p.m.: Kidnapped
Yeah, yeah, Lost is back on my list. It still lost me, but nine o'clock is a really weak hour. What about Criminal Minds? As last season went on, I think it lost momentum. Stories about crazies, geniuses and crazy geniuses can't afford to be predictable, and a number of the shows were. And the first few episodes of Justice have felt surprisingly hollow, even though I like the cast. So, I'll probably be switching. It's an opportunity for either to grab me back, but I don't expect that anything will land a decisive victory.
I think I'm looking forward to Kidnapped because Vanished was so bad. The Nine doesn't really hold any interest to me. I don't know much about Jericho other than it's another sci-fi-y thing, but I'll give it a chance. If Jericho fails, I'll probably default to the fun-but-ultimately-mediocre Bones; if Kidnapped fails, back to CSI:NY.
Thursday:
8 p.m.: Smallville
9 p.m.: Grey's Anatomy
10 p.m.: Shark
This is a rough night; let's that some of these shows move to other nights to fill in for early cancellations. Smallville takes the first hour by a nose, solely because Justin Hartley, who would have been Aquaman if the pilot had been picked up, is now going to be Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) trying to form the Justice League. That sounds like fun. Expect defections to Ugly Betty, if the show catches on, and Survivor, if they do some crazy race thingies.
Grey's Anatomy takes the next hour because it's like crack, but Supernatural was a very, very close second. By the end of its first season, it had gotten really good, and I'm conflicted again. I can only get one channel at a time, and I'm going to hate missing either one of these. If one of them gets an internet option, I'll probably take it.
Similar to Kidnapped, Shark probably benefits from Justice being not so good. Six Degrees looks only vaguely interesting, and I won't resort to it unless James Woods fails me greatly.
Also, I'll be watching Murder City on BBC America until it ends.
Friday:
10 p.m.: Numbers
Whenever: Battlestar Galactica & Doctor Who
Fridays suck, but I like math and sci-fi. I don't try to convert people to Galactica, but the new Doctor Who should be watched by everyone. If you can't get your hands on the DVD, BBC America is going to be running the first season starting September 29. (This means you, Dad.) Season two starts on Sci-Fi whenever.
