Shortlisting.

It's always nice to be able to scratch a few books off of the list of books you need to read.

No, wait.

It's almost always nice. It's not so nice when you scratch a number of works off of your list because the racist remarks of the authors make you blind with rage:
Niven said a good way to help hospitals stem financial losses is to spread rumors in Spanish within the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs for transplants.

"The problem [of hospitals going broke] is hugely exaggerated by illegal aliens who aren’t going to pay for anything anyway," Niven said.

"Do you know how politically incorrect you are?" Pournelle asked.

"I know it may not be possible to use this solution, but it does work," Niven replied.
I'm also considering swearing off the summation of mathematical series just so I never have to see the name "Sigma" again.

Spotted at Live Granades.

If the work in question is Ringworld, you are not missing too much, I promise you. Having read it recently, I was.. underwhelmed. It has a couple of decent ideas, but it was kind of disappointing overall.

Larry Niven? How disappointing. He's an OK author, but certainly not good enough to make me willing to ignore that comment.

Also, WTF? The government gives a crap about a bunch of SF authors' politics?

The whole report is worth skimming, just so you can also see David Brin go a little crazy with a cell phone.

Yeechhh. Niven joins the shunnn list, along with Tom Clancy, Robert Jordan, Piers Anthony, L. Ron., ... (plus those that I've never read at all). Sorry to see David Brin at SIGMA, though... I just read the original Uplift trilogy and enjoyed it. Not sure what his political deal is but will look him up some.

I have only one possible response to that. Unfortunately for you, it is macroey.

Thusly.

I don't know...i'd like to see a report with more context and tone. I wonder if he was serious, or if it was intended as a Swiftian Modest Proposal.
