TV Rundown

I am a TV junkie. Here are some scattered thoughts about things I'm watching.
  • 90210. Couldn't even care past the opener.
  • American Dad. Still funnier than Family Guy by far.
  • Bones. Bones is Bones is Bones. It hasn't changed, and probably won't ever. Except that I'm not a big fan of parade the Murphy Brown secretaries grad students.
  • Chuck. The theme of this season seems to be making Chuck more competent. Which is good, because it should have been happening most of last season too. I hope that we can very quickly move past the point we're at now, where he has to re-realize his competence in the fourth act of every episiode. Adam Baldwin: still awesome. Capt. Awesome: still Capt. Awesome.
  • Cold Case. I haven't been watching, but Ojou loves telling me how sad they are.
  • Dirty Sexy Money. This show is still crazy. I particularly like that the philosophy of the show is to reveal secrets before they get annoying.
  • The Dresden Files. This show just popped up on Hulu, and so I decided to fill in the gaps of what I'd seen. It turns out that the episodes I saw were pretty much the worst ones. I got a bit more enjoyment out of the ones that were left (though there were still some stinkers I hadn't seen too). I do need to borrow some of those books.
  • Fringe. I'm really disliking this show, and I can't get a handle on why. I think it's the straight-faced portrayal of SUPERSCIENCE. It's one thing when Mulder and Scully went out and investigated things that were acknowledged to be flukes of science and nature without ever fully understanding the how or why. This takes every wacky idea anyone has ever had and says, "Oh yeah, we totally managed to do that impossible thing with reliably duplicatable results, like, decades ago. Here, let me show you." Thanks, Professor Impossible.
  • Grey's Anatomy. Still a guilty pleasure. Things seem to be calming down on the suck, and it was nice that the theme of the season opener was pretty much "OH MY GOD WE ARE A TERRIBLE HOPSITAL!" But it still has amazing emotional pacing that provides satisfaction every time I watch.
  • Heroes. Downgraded from disappointing to train-wreck. I'm keeping up on Hulu and reporting to Ojou—things like, "The African can paint the future, but apparently only Parkman's future."
  • House. Lack of Wilson makes me sad. Emotionally stunted private detective makes me happy. I am conflicted.
  • Kitchen Nightmares. I'm not really watching it any more. The editing is way too predictable in the U.S. version, and I miss Gordon's hushed narration.
  • Knight Rider. I keep meaning to give this a try, but is there a reason? It just seems like it belongs in Sunday-afternoon syndication, not prime time.
  • Law & Order: SVU. The first two episodes of the season seemed to be a little bit more free-form than previous seasons, including several references to Homicide in the first episode. Sadly, I had to explain the prior lives of Detective Munch to Ojou, who did not know about them.
  • Life. Did I write about it last year? This is a real favorite of Ojou and me. The crimes can be a bit overly metaphorical (a man leading a double life is killed by a bomb that rips him into two pieces?
really?), but it works for the show. NBC is really pushing the show, airing two new episodes a week, so there's plenty of chances to enjoy it.
  • Life on Mars. The U.S. version is a bit weird. I really loved the original (except for the ending). This remake seems decent enough, but I don't know that it's going to be different enough for me to be able to stand it. For a while at least.
  • The Mentalist. There's something about this premise that really rubs me the wrong way, and it's more than just the way they've cannabalized the premise of Psych. Possibly a future subject. I may keep watching for a while because of my inertia for procedurals.
  • Numbers. Since its first season, Numbers has sunk pretty deep into mediocrity. But it has the general crime procedural inertia that keeps me watching.
  • Pushing Daisies. Still bizarre. And how come I haven't seen any Li'l Gumshoe icons. Not that I could add them, but that moment was just so damn cute.
  • Prison Break. This show just keeps getting crazier. It's now essentially Suicide Squad. What I love most about this season is that the laconic killer hunting them is the same actor that played Dr. Bailey's long-suffering husband on Grey's Anatomy I like to pretend that they're the same character.
  • Private Practice. An even guiltier pleasure, since I don't really couldn't give a reason to watch the first season of this show. But this season threatens to be (shockingly) good. The practice is broke, the doctors are scrambling to knuckle down and make money, the relationships have meat instead of just witty banter and pointless flirting, and the writing team seems to be focusing on really sticky ethical dilemmas.
  • Project Runway. This has been an incredibly disappointing season, not only in the field of selections, but in the asshatery of the producers
  • Raising the Bar. Zack Morris & Gunn in a legal drama. I was very disappointed by the pilot, but Ojou is enjoying it. I may try a later episode and see if it sticks.
  • ReGenesis. Every time I watch Fringe, I think about this show. Season 2 popped up on Hulu, and though the overall mystery arc was terrible, the way they deal with near-future science is terribly exciting. The fact that the star of this show had a throwaway part in the pilot for Fringe just makes me angrier.
  • Supernatural. On an slight upswing from last year. I'm kind of digging the Dean+Angel vs. Sam+Demon rumble that's shaping up.
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I completely missed this last season, but I did a quick catch-up when Hulu had season 1. I was surprised by how good it got toward the end of the season. This season, the quality has remained strong, and the recent episode "Allison from Palmdale" was shockingly good. I like the way this show raises questions and thinks through the implications rather methodically.
And a final note, from the John Munch page on Wikipedia: "The character is also slated to appear in an episode of Paris enquĂȘtes criminelles, the French version of Law & Order: Criminal Intent." That's just crazy.

You don't watch NCIS or Criminal Minds?

I watch Bones and Cold Case only occasionally, but I've been pretty faithful to NCIS, Criminal Minds, and Numbers.

I recently acquired ReGenesis: Season One and I'm super-stoked to hear S2 is on Hulu!

No Heroes? Pushing Daisies, Chuck, True Blood, and Heroes are my shows this season, though after season 2, Heroes is on probation.

I knew I knew that assassin from Prison Break! The chief from Grey's showed up in Six Feet Under as Keith's abusive dad. THAT was strange to watch.

I've been trying to watch Fringe - the thing that annoys me most is the son's "witty remarks." I want to keep watching it because it's a JJ Abrams show (and LOST is my favorite show ever, and Alias was my old favorite).

I am mostly an ABC junkie (Grey's, Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Ugly Betty, Private Practice, Brothers and Sisters, LOST, sometimes Desperate Housewives). Unfortunately the website won't work on my computer :( (I also watch SVU, Heroes, Chuck, and House). It's scary to see it all listed out like that.

I recently was weirded out at Josh Charles and Teri Polo guesting on SVU as a couple. It was like Dan and Rebecca from Sports Night finally got married...and then had dysfunctional children.

I finally shook the "Grey's Anatomy" monkey off my back. By season 4 the show could have been renamed "Bailey, Karev & (Incredibly Annoying) Friends." Then Bailey and Karev drank the Incredibly Annoying Kool-Aid and I found I had no reason to continue. I'm still watching "Dirty Sexy Money" but am sad that Juliet has apparently Chuck-Cunninghammed.

I just watched the first three episodes of Knight Rider. A more epic trainwreck has yet to be invented.
