Pushing My Cart Along.

I think we kind of just elected Mr. Terrific.
Mr. Terrific

As of now, it looks like the California constitution will be amended specifically for the purpose of eliminating the right of people to marry whomever they wish. The Californians I know who didn't vote because of their issues with the presidential race have a lot to answer for. Consider yourself On Notice.
On Notice

I may update this tomorrow, after everyone's had some rest, but the question that's in my head is:

What's on your Obama Victory mixtape?

I know that Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher" was played in Grant Park just before Obama's speech. [livejournal.com profile] ojouchan kept thinking of The Wiz, and fell asleep trying to decide on which Mahalia Jackson song was the most perfect. I've seen references to Steely Dan and Sheryl Crow recently, too. I know there are more, we'll think about it tomorrow.

Unsurprisingly, I'm thinking about Stew's music again. Unfortunately, it's nowhere on YouTube or much of anywhere, so be very careful with this mp3 of "Heidegger in Harlem."
Now the preacher's wearing boxing gloves, the crowd is with him now.
He's punching out the demons of the state.
Even Malcolm smiles, adjusts his tie in the book store window,
He says, "Take me home now, Preacher, I can't wait."

History clock
Don't make no tick-tock.
It won't tell the time,
So which watch should be mine?
It won't plant the seeds
Which whisper through the trees
And sway on the song
That pushes my cart along.

I am sick at the thought of Prop 8 passing. FUCK.

Wait, people did what now? They didn't vote on anything becasue they didn't want to vote for president? Wow. I have nothing to say but Fuck Them (which I do not say lightly) for not participating and I hope they don't EVER complain about anything...or else the two-fingered salute is for them.

I'm going to do an Obama victory radio show this weekend. I've been planning this show for months and I am deliriously happy to get to do it. Songs will include:

"Yes I Can!" -- Sammy Davis Jr.
"There'll Be Some Changes Made" -- Dolores Gray and/or W. Lee O'Daniel and his Hillbilly Boys and/or Dinah Washington and possibly all three
"Lady Needs a Change" -- Ethel Merman
"Love Can Change the Stars" -- Lena Horne
"I Believe In You" -- Frank Sinatra
"Get Happy" -- Ella Fitzgerald
"New Sun in the Sky" -- Judy Garland
"Great Day" -- Lena Horne
"It's a Good Day" -- Peggy Lee
"It's a Hap-Hap-Happy Day" (from a comp called Hits of 1940, I forget the singer)
"Happy Days Are Here Again" -- Leo Reisman Orchestra
"Jump for Joy" -- Ivie Anderson
"Let's Have a Jubilee" -- Dinah Washington
"It's a Wonderful World" -- Frank Sinatra
"It's a Lovely Day Today" -- Astrud Gilberto
"The Best Is Yet to Come" -- Blossom Dearie

That's about half the show, I'm going to see if I can put together an entire two hours.

I'm so happy someone else thought of that song for their election music :) I have it on my ipod and I've been listening to it for days now.

The Florida 'protection' of marriage act passed. It needed a 60% majority of voters- and got 62% so far. And people failed to repeal the 1940s law allowing the government to take away asian immigrants property. It isn't enforced, but still. The local media thinks people voted to keep the law because they thought it allowed the government to seize illegal hispanics property (it doesn't). And even if it did- it is problematic at best. So, Florida voted for Obama, but screwed up a whole bunch of state laws.

Oddly, the bit that I was humming this morning is from Hairspray:

You can't stop today (No!)
As it comes speeding down the track (Ooh, child, yes!)
Yesterday is history (begone!)
And it's never coming back (Look ahead!)
'Cause tomorrow is a brand new day
And it don't know white from black!

I heard CSNY's "Chicago" this morning -- it felt great to sing "We can change the world, rearrange the world this time", and really believe it.

Sorry to hear about Prop 8. What the hell? I know that sensation of feeling alienated from the state you live in. 16 years ago here in Colorado, we had a similar deal, an amendment to the constitution forbidding GLBT people from receiving any specific legal protection. It got tied up in court and never went into effect, thank god. This too shall pass.
