Dreamwidth Updates

One of the things I've started watching is the DW community changelog. I imagine it won't be terribly useful as time goes on, but right now, it lets me know what patches are being put in as they happen, instead of waiting for the weekly updates. So I know that the friend importer went online a few days ago. So all that work I did on Sunday is dust in the wind, as all it took was a push of the button to give access to absolutely everybody's Open ID.

Also, the filters were populated with Open IDs too. So Open ID users can, for example, access my sex filter again on Dreamwidth. Of course, since I haven't yet added Dreamwidth accounts to my filters, Dreamwidth users can't at the moment. (Don't worry, I'll fix it up before I post again.)

In fact, sometime soon, I'm going to do a massive reorganization of my friends list, dropping a bunch of journals that are defunct, or that I don't read very much, or that I don't think read me. I'm saying this in advance, because the "defriending" is not really intended to deny anyone access to locked posts who already has it. So if I drop you, don't worry, let me know, and I'll work things out.


(Also, there was a patch about the crossposter and user tags. I'm going to see what happens when I link to my DW account (tablesaw) and my LJ account (tablesaw).)

Well, don't forget that one of the advantages of dreamwidth is that it separates 'people who can read my journal' from 'people whose journals I read'. If you're not worried about defunct people reading your journal, might as well leave them on the list, (unless the cruft becomes too much of a mental burden, I suppose).

True, with over 300 LJ friends, about a hundred of whom haven't posted this year, I feel like I'm behind on housekeeping. I'm just going to take some time to do some simplification. Cut back on what I read and give access too, then give access freely to people who want it.

I have a very hard time getting bugzilla to show me any useful information, so changelog is fantastic for me.

yeah, bugzilla's search is really only useful in its advanced version, which looks at first glance terribly complicated. glad changelog works for you!

Where's the friend importer? I need to run that, and then go take a look at the crossposter (which I hear through the grapevine is up, sort of?)

Have they figured out how to let you read your DW reading page and see locked posts from your LJ friends page? Of course I still don't know how to even see unlocked LJ friends on my reading page...

NM, figured out the friends import thing when I imported some newer entries and some old ones where I had to manually repair the encoding.

Also, is it possible to subscribe to LJ communities via DW? What about importing your RSS feeds?

RSS feeds have to be added manually, I believe (probably because if the feed doesn't yet exist, you have to rename it on DW).

Communities are kind of tricky on either site:

• You can create an RSS feed of an LJ community to read on DW (like racism101_feed).
  
• On LiveJournal: You can "watch" an LJ community by logging in with an Open ID (if you want to create one for a Dreamwidth account). But Open IDs can't join communities on LJ.
  
• On Dreamwidth: Open IDs can both "watch" and "join" DW communities. However, Open ID members cannot create new posts in the community, because they cannot create posts at all. They can, however, read locked posts and comment to posts that limit commenting to members only.

The friend importer is now another option on the journal importer, which has been moved for the start of Open Beta. Just check the "Friends" option. This should automatically import your custom security filters, but you might want check that opeion anyway.

The crossposter is up, and most of the major bugs have been fixed, but it's still a work in progress. Dreamwidth user tags now get translated correctly, but I don't know if you can crosspost under a filter yet (though you can crosspost under a general lock).

To start the crossposter, you need to associate your non-DW journal with your DW account. I believe you still do that under the Other Sites tab on the Manage Account page. Then, the option to crosspost will appear at the bottom of the Post Entry page.

And now, I'll skip to the last question: you can create an RSS feed of any LJ account by using Dreamwidth's Synidcation page, which works like LJ's. You can find out how LJ FAQs work in the relevant LJ FAQ. But it's still just an RSS feed.

As to the penultimate issue, the problem got pushed back to the full launch. A brief overview of the story is found in this comment thread, including a link to the Bug List.

Sounds like the RSS feed is the only way to go for LJ communities. I suppose I'll have to look into that one. But I suspect DW won't be useful for me for reading list purposes until they figure out the "how to get locked/filtered LJ entries to show up on your DW reading list" issue, since my whole goal if I move is to be able to remain in seamless contact with my LJ friends.
