Red

The last of three fanmixes for [profile] whedonland. Not fannishly associated, so just a mix. The recipient of these gifts asked for redhead-related things, so I made a mix on the topic. Links go to MP3s where freely available, and to streaming versions for everything else.

The ability to read the cover may depend on your monitor settings. It's a feature, not a bug.

Patty Griffin, "Flaming Red" (Youtube)
I took a walk around the block.
I bought a candle; it was
Flaming Red, Flaming Red
This mix started out with the title "Flaming Red," but it changed when I started playing with the cover art. This still comes first. It's the first song I think of when it comes to redheads.

Suzanne Vega, "Blood Makes Noise" (Youtube)
Blood makes noise, it's a ringing in my ear.
And I can't really hear you in the thickening of fear.
One of the obvious redhead artists, I could've tried a deeper cut, but I just needed something to fit in the mix. I remember this song from its appearance on Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Garbage, "As Heaven Is Wide" (Youtube)
As far from God as Heaven is wide.
Another ginger artist with a lot of possibilities, but this one was dropped from Working in the Devil's Playground, so I threw it in here.

The B-52s, "Juliet of the Spirits" (Youtube)
You're a force of nature can't be controlled
You know you've got it girl come on and let it show
The linked video shows footage of the Fellini film this song is named after, which also features a red-haired protagonist.

DJ Magnet, "Love Comes Running Up That Hill Gently (Placebo vs. Pet Shop Boys vs. Kate Bush)" (MP3)
And if I only could make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places.
Does it make me a bad feminist if my favorite Kate Bush song is a mashup? Well, too bad, it is.

The Weasel King, "Red Hair (2DefMice Nerdy Gospel Mix)" (MP3)
Hey, I think I finally got it figured out
Red hair is one thing that I'm all about
Wizard rock is, predictably, fertile ground for songs about redheads. I love the original, but I decided to go with this remix from the Old Nerdy Bastard album because I like it a hair's breadth more.

Janet Robin, "Say It One More Time"
Just say it one more time.
Darling, curl your heart around mine.
Janet Robin's a local artist, and this, along with the songs from her first album, appears to be missing from the web.

The Parson Red Heads, "Punctual as Usual" (Youtube)
I've got a girl who's never on time
When I'm late, it's always all right.
Some of the band members do have red hair, it's not just a name.

Indigo Girls, "Tangled Up in Blue" (Youtube)
Early one mornin' the sun was shinin', I was layin' in bed,
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all, if her hair was still red.
I like the Indigo Girls' version a bit better than Bob's.

Willie Nelson, "Cowboys Are Frequently (Secretly) Fond of Each Other" (Youtube)
Cowboys are frequently (secretly) fond of each other
Say what did you think all them saddles and boots was about?
For those wondering, yes, Willie Nelson did have red hair before it went grey.

If I wanted to be tricky, I could have had "Don't Give Up" on this mix twice, once with Kate Bush and once with Willie Nelson, but then the mix wouldn't have gay cowboys. CONSIDER THAT!

Eddi Reader, "California" (Lyrics at artist's website)
Why don't you come with me?
I'll get you through January in California.
I don't really know why I have this album on my iTunes, but she has red hair, and I am a sucker for songs about California.

Paul Kelly, "Curly Red" (Lyrics at artist's website)
Waves of fire upon her head, above a fine young frame.
She melts my bones right there in the bed when she calls my name.
This is the second song I think of when I think about redheads.

Marian Call, "I'll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It's Chic (The Nerd Anthem)" (Streaming at artist's website)
I have been a nerd since my first five-syllable word,
And no TV series or movie changes that.
And I'll still be a geek now Vote for Pedro's so last week.
I don't care whether Milan endorses plaid.
And ending with another obvious choice, the redhead sing who released an album of Serenity filk. It would be a crime to omit her.
