I hadn't previously considered that a geocache might remain active for ten years or more but there must be some really old caches out there. (Not saying that you found the one planted in Feb 2001 at age ten plus, of course...)
I signed up for a geocaching.com account in 2002 and finally went geocaching in April 2010, once I could borrow a phone with GPS functionality!

Though I found them a few years ago, all three of them are still active. Older caches get a lot more maintenance to preserve them (and they're usually in iconic and well-protected areas that makes it easier to maintain them anyway). There's another 2001 cache in Griffith Park that was disabled for years (burned in a fire, then it took a while for cover to regrow), and archive queries were successfully fended off because of its age and history.
I was there when it was disabled, but I should go back again soon.
