Dear Atheists and Agnostics Who Have Been Bugging the Hell Out of Me Recently:

Thousands of years of religion have demonstrated that bad things happen when a person or group of persons decide to act superior to another person or group of persons because of their respective perspectives on God. Your particular perspective that there is not or may not be a God is no different. So stop feeling smug.

I understand that you have issues with the concepts of religion and/or God. You are not special for having noticed the issues, nor are you special for having rejected said concepts.

I understand that it's possible that your cat might be [a] God; how droll and witty you are for mentioning it. If you believe your cat is [a] God, I'm fine with that; but if you don't, then stop bugging me about how possible it might be.

I understand that religion has been used by many people across the the span of time to exploit others for personal gain. Really, what hasn't?

There are plenty of people who are going to agree with you and tell you you are right. Don't be surprised if not everyone does.

As to what I believe: I believe that simply because I believe something doesn't make other people who have different points of view on the same issue wrong. I don't care if you believe there is no God or if someone else believes that there is no God but Allah or if someone else believes that God is everything or if someone else believes that there are an uncountable number of Gods. As far as I'm concerned, everyone's right; it seems to bring peace and help me understand views different from my own. As a result, I will get angry if you declare that religion is lies or legends, just as I get angry when a priest declares that people who are not Catholic are going to burn in Hell for all eternity.

i thought that was a spot-on argument you put forth. i suppose i'm an atheist more than anything else, but i don't push my views on other people unless they ask and are genuinely curious about it, and i appreciate it when someone else has the same respect for me to leave me alone and not try to "save me" and convert me to whatever religion they are (because they are obviously in the right and the only reason why i haven't already converted is because i am ignorant, ugh). religion can be a fascinating topic of discussion, but when it comes to that tricky area of what you yourself believe, it seems as if many people (at least the people that i know and have argued with) feel as if they have to prove to me that they are correct in order to keep on believing. and i agree, militant atheists are just as annoying as any other kind of religious extremist. it's heartening to see more people with accepting attitudes towards religion. :)
