I failed to post, on Friday, that
ojouchan and I were going to Disneyland. We went and it was fun. It wasn't my best day in terms of time management, but we both got Southern California Annual Passes, so we expect to return.
Saturday was my dad's 60th birthday party. I was struggling over what to get him, but eventually my sister and I pooled resources to buy him a Wii. He'd been interested since Christmas, but at the time, I'd told him to wait until the demand died down. Since that hasn't happened, and since my sister and I have been big on the Wii gaming, I thought it was a good time to get him a system.
I told my sister I'd take care of it, and I started looking around. I knew there were plenty of resellers I could go to if necessary, but I wanted to see if I could get something for the retail price first. I fumbled around calling and looking into local big-box stores trying to find a system, with the expected lack of results.
I also looked at Wii Tracker, which gives updates about the Wii status of online retailers. Of course, I didn't see anything in stock, but the History page gave me some interesting information. It looked like lots of places like Sears and Toys 'R' Us would have a Wii available for a little while several times in a row. I imagine that these stores trickle their inventory onto the site a few items at a time. And, most importantly, these updates always seem to happen in the middle of the night. So, last weekend, I planned to stay up all night (not very hard for me), and keep updating to find a Wii. Turns out I didn't have to. After getting home from
cramerica's, I checked the site to find a Wii available from Toys 'R' Us.
Why such detail? Well, Nintendo has warned that they probably won't be able to meet the increased demand for the Wii this holiday season. So, if you're looking to buy one without paying a premium, I'd suggest you try to get one in the next few weeks. And if you need to do so, I think this is your best bet. Stay up late, order online, and hide the box until December.
