For my birthday, my dad gave me a gift certificate to Phidippides, a store that sells very good running shoes. I'd been meaning to start running again for a while, but I hadn't had the time or money to get new shoes. And I'd spent enough time running in high school to know the difference good shoes can make. Besides, with [livejournal.com profile] ojouchan going to the gym nearly every day, I needed to match her energy. So now, nearly every day, I need to either run, hike, or spend some time on the exercise bike.

I'm sure you're expecting me to link to Google Maps with GPS records of my runs. But I won't. Not because I don't want to, but because I can't. For some reason, my GPSr-to-USB connector isn't working. The unit still works, but it's difficult to download the saved information onto my computer. It's still possible if I take the SD card out, stick it into the printer, then connect Ojou's laptop to the printer, then send the information back to my computer. But I'd rather get it fixed. I need to check if it's still under warranty, but preliminary Google searches indicate that it's just the connector cable.

So instead, I'll use a nifty website calle Gmaps Pedometer, which has the advantage of automatically showing basic altitude and calorie burning (though the calorie counter doesn't take into account the elevation change).

My first run looked like this. I didn't want to post a map to my house, so this is an intersection nearby. My runs are actually about a half mile longer. I decided to just run until the hills as far as I could. I turned off of Gower when the impending hill looked to steep, and I continued up Beachwood until I started to get winded. Further north along that road is where Hollywoodland was, and you can continue up to the Hollywood Sign. Eventually, I think it might be nice to run all the way there and back.

I was happy with an initial 1.5 miles, but Ojou was a bit disappointed, and suggested that I run further on a flatter road. So since then, I've been taking this route along Franklin. Of course, just getting to Western didn't feel like enough, so I decided to run up Western into Griffith Park. If you look at the elevation chart, you can see that last bit is steep. By the time I reach the top, I'm wiped; so I take a break by walking up the thirty-two stairs that happen to be there. I catch my breath, and then continue back down.

Now, I'm off to vote. Wish me luck!
