Here's something I meant to post about a while back, but with this, that, and the other thing, I haven't. But it brightened my day then, and hopefully it'll bright some days now.
When I told the story of The First Rickroll, I knew that, the internet being the internet, it would almost certainly find its way to the people involved. And it did. Brian Coleman, the Astley performer from the story, e-mailed me last week to say hi.
See, someone he knew had found my story (probably because I'd linked to their theater company), and told him it was out there. He looked for it, but couldn't find it.
Then he just happen to see a mention of an article on GameSetWatch, and he just happened to recognize my name on the article, then he just happened to check out this blog which just happened to still have The First Rickroll on the front page. So that's pretty damn amazing.
He did have an important clarification, in the interest of preserving the historical record:
I also learned that he'd been retelling a story that I'd told several people at GW, including the woman who he would marry (a very classy lady). I'm not going to tell that other story now, although preliminary evidence indicates that it's out there already. It's really much better in person anyway.
And thus the world keeps rickrolling along.

You really nailed the story, by the way, with the exception of one detail: it wasn't planned. Chris just disappeared at one point, leaving Ptolemy and I to talk to some girls. When he turned off the music and made the announcement, there wasn't any question of what needed to happen. I knew what to do.(Ptolemy in this story is Ptolemy Slocum, whom you may know as Bono.)
