Horse-Blindingly Good.
Jul. 12th, 2007 09:24 amFirst, thanks to everyone who commented yesterday. More on that in a bit.
Yesterday, after coming home, Jonaya was still asleep, so I sat down on the couch and watched a bit of TV. This Is Spinal Tap was on, which cheered me up for a bit, but when I saw St. Hubbins angsting to his girlfriend about the storm of cancellations across the midwest, it occurred ot me that this was not the film to watch when dealing with irrational feelings of failure.
Instead, I decided to talk
ojouchan into seeing the 12:20 matinee of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was pretty last-minute—we bought our tickets after the previews had started—but everything worked out fine. The theater was comfortably full, but not packed, and we were able to find two seats very easily.
I liked the movie. Unlike the other gilms in the series, I felt like it had a lot of insight into the book. Harry's alienation played out in ways that were more interesting than Rowling's narration, and it helped ground Harry's emotions.
It's been a while since I read any Rowling, and I found I'd forgotten a lot of the plot of the book. As a result, I felt I had a better view of whether or not the movie plot made sense without the book. For the most part, I think it did. The whole "Room of Requirement" business probably won't make sense to nonreaders, but the whole thing seemed coherent as a film (but it still needs the earlier movies in the series).
I thought Radcliff gave a very good performance, and I have to thank him for making Equus jokes relevant again.
I was also pleased to see George Harris in the film. After seeing Don Gilet in Doctor Who last week, I feel like I've been watching mine own private Night Detective/55 Degrees North reunion.
So today, armed with advice and encouragement, I'm ready to go back to apartment hunting tomorrow. I've asked my supervisor to print out a more formal documentation of my raise (the one she gave me last week was mostly hand-written), and I've gotten a copy of my favorable credit report (or I will have, once I buy a replacement printer cartridge). Most importantly, I've got a new attitude. Mostly, I was flustered yesterday. Math is not an obstacle to me, but trying to do math I needed in my head wasn't very helpful. I'm going to visit each apartment knowing all the relevant percentages aforehand.
Thanks again.
